Abstract This presentation identifies the size and direction of the new national security market after first defining what it is made up of. It explains the following characteristics which are seen throughout the market:
  1. response is threat-driven and risk based
  2. governments set requirements which are mostly outcome focused
  3. Government expenditure dominates the market
  4. Uniqueness of each organisation and its security needs
  5. Layers of security
  6. Security expenditure comes in waves
  7. Lack of product and system standards
It concludes by identifying likely market trends. The presentation will also overview the Centres latest report The business opportunities in support the Australian intelligence Community.
Bio Athol Yates is the Director of the Australian Homeland Security Research Centre. The Australian Homeland Security Research Centre undertakes independent, evidence-based analysis of domestic security issues as well as facilitating a range of security related professional development events. Athol Yates specialises in analysing national security policy and the role played by the private sector in enhancing national security. He is the editor of the Australian Homeland Security Market Insight and the National Security Practice Notes. He also managers the Safeguarding Australia program run by Engineers Australia and is the Outreach Manager for the Research Network for a Secure Australia, which has been given $3 million by the Australian Research Council. By being involved in these activities, plus running conferences such as todays one, it enables him to see trends across government and industry, as well as understanding the thinking of major players.
